American condom-makers layoff workers as production heads overseas
Filed under: Sex Sells, Extracurriculars
Some of the world's greatest condom manufacturers are based in America. There was a time when the words "made in the USA," stamped on a box of prophylactics, were a reassuring mark of quality, a veritable guarantee that the enclosed pessary would not fail in its appointed duty.
And now...well, American condoms have fallen on hard times. Recently, in fact, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a federally-funded organization that provides economic, social, and medical aid to overseas countries, decided that, when the rubber hits the road, they are not committed to buying American. In a surprising change of direction, USAID switched from American-made condoms to sheaths that are manufactured in China and Korea.
Puns aside, this is no laughing matter for Eufala, Alabama. The small town, whose citizens have been making condoms for almost 40 years, is reliant upon rubbers for a fair bit of the local economy. USAID, which has distributed an estimated 10 billion condoms overseas, was a major client, and its decision may cost Alatech, the local manufacturer, up to 300 jobs. As the consequences ripple through the area, Eufala can expect to lose many, many more jobs.
This decision wasn't made lightly, but Alatech, unfortunately, charges more than five cents per condom. While this price seems very low to anyone who has ever purchased a retail prophylactic, when multiplied across a massive order like USAID's, it becomes quite high. Overseas suppliers, notably Korea's Unidus corporation and China's Quingdao Double Butterfly Group, can supply condoms for as little as two cents apiece.
Of course, China and Korea don't have to deal with America's pesky labor laws, but that's another matter entirely...
Moreover, Alatech and the government have previously had disputes over delivery and product specifications, although Alatech claims that its delivery problems have long since been handled. The primary problem, apparently, lies in the fact that Alatech's condoms are very thick, which has caused some overseas beneficiaries to reject them. The Alabama company asserts that it can manufacture the condoms to almost any specification, and made USAID's sheaths thick because those were the requirements that the government demanded.
For that matter, it's worth noting that, as recent pet food and lead-toy scandals have demonstrated, China's manufacturing industry is far from perfect. In fact, by its own admission, its condoms are often too thick, too uncomfortable, and have poor quality control.
The government, meanwhile, has hired a Massachusetts company to act as a middleman, shielding it from a bid protest. In this, USAID has been helped by Congress' decision to drop the "buy American" provision in a recent spending bill. In doing so, it opened the door for USAID to seek overseas vendors.
If the government's stimulus program won't help condom manufacturers to retain their employees, then maybe it's time for consumers to pick up the slack. The next time you find yourself trying to choose between Durex or Trojan condoms, ask yourself if you'd rather put food on an American table or one in England. When it comes to rubbers, remember your patriotic duty and keep America's prophylactic makers in business!

This is a new one on me, so let me see if I understand this correctly. Has the government of the United States of America been providing taxpayer money to fund USAID, an organization that has provided over 10 billion condoms to foreign companies? Why?
That in itself is a truly amazing little known fact, but not as amazing as the audacity of our Liberal Democratic Congress to pass a spending bill recently that dropped the "buy American" provision. If fact, the decision by USAID to take advantage of that idiotic Congressional decision and change from providing the world with American made condoms to cheaper Korean and Chinese made rubbers is beyond audacious and stupid.
It is irrational and un-American to jeopardize the livelihood of the 300 Eufala, Alabama condom manufacturing workers (AND GOD ONLY KNOWS HOW MANY OTHER AMERICAN WORKERS) during this financial debacle and unprecidented government sponsored stimulus spending spree.
Wake up America! Read the handwriting being engraved on the walls of Congress and the White House. This mess was engineered and is being perpetuated by liberal Democrats who are steadily chipping away at America's greatness and won't be satisfied until this country is brought to its knees by the foreign governments who are buying our debt and our future.

Yea, brilliant, the debt is almost solely the doing of the right and somehow the left is at fault for it? Now rubbers are the fault of the left too? Explain who was president as the debt was accummulated and what it was for. WWII and the Civil War were neccessary, Fascist Ronnie's wealth shift to the right was not and is the reason we are in such debt.

Joe Baby is absolutely right. I find it appauling that a US Government organization is willing to put Americans out of work to save a few pennies on a product that we are giving away to other countries (yes, giving out to other peopel in other countries, not in the US as some people seem to comprehend). Unbelievable and dare I say, UnAmerican!
The USAID organization should be ashamed of themselves for even considering purchasing from any other country, but the US. Then there is Congress... listing the Buy American policy. They have already allow so many jobs go overseas, via the corporate world - does our on government have to allow it's own agencies to turn its back on America too???

And while we're at it lets not forget to mention the 900 million dollars Hillary took to Gaza to rebuild the damn muslum neighborhoods after Israel got tired of them shooting rockets into Israel and killing their citizens. Why doesn't the government get the idea that the POS Muslum's hate us just for being Americans. So now they have more money to buy weapons to kill non believers, or maybe IEDs for our soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan. I love the way this administration loves the American soldier, wants them all to get a present of their own IED.

Somehow it has slipped your notice that we had Republican congresses all through Clinton and Bush years and the Democrats only had one house of Congress during the last two Bush years. So......there was NO liberal Democratic congress passing the legislation you objected to.

Thank you Joe Baby. I did not know that tidbit about dropping the "buy American" provision.
According to Wikopedia, USAID's aim is to "extend a helping hand to those people overseas struggling to make a better life, recover from a disaster or striving to live in a free and democratic country..." Yep, our new President promised "change" allright but I don't think providing low quality and unhealthy pregnancy prevention to boot is the kind of change we Americans and even those poor women (in every sense of the word) are going to end up with.
This just proves our government has no conscience to do something like that to poor women around the world.

No Bob, you have managed to ignore the facts as stated; probably because you have had your head buried in the sand for too long. It was the Nancy girl led liberal Democratic Congress that passed the outrageous spending bill that dropped the original "buy American" provisions. This gave the green light to USAID to save the American taxpayers money by purchasing from foreign manufacturers and allowing another 300 American workers the opportunity to experience unemployment and welfare dependency.
Perhaps you, and especially ED (2), would like to leave your heads buried in the sand and continue to ignore the fact that your beloved liberal Democratic Party initiated the legislation that caused the financial crisis we now face! Here are some more facts for you to ignore and disbelieve should you decide to keep your head in the sand and be influenced only by the liberal press and Hollywood celebrity talking heads.
You, and the public even more so, need to be made aware of the fact that the path to financial failure started in 1995, when the Clinton administration, deciding to change the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, had HUD (remember Andrew Cuomo?) lower housing loan requirements to unreasonably unsound standards for low income and even welfare recipients who were destined to forfeit their mortgages. When banks balked at these new requirements, they were threatened with redline discrimination charges by the Attorney General of the US (remember Janet Reno?). These are the very same sub prime mortgages that two Clinton administration executives subsequently appointed to run Fannie Mae gobbled up. By implementing fraudulent bookkeeping practices for six years, they raked in $100s of millions in salary and bonuses while Fannie Mae was doling out millions to ACORN and into the election coffers of their Democratic Congressional overseers. Unlike the fate of ENRON executives, this guaranteed their escape from prosecution when the deception was discovered and made public in 2004. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), a member of the Federal Financial Management Committee, was second only to Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT), now Chairman of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, for huge campaign contributions received from Fannie Mae. Does any of this ring a bell or at least jog your memory? Don't you know that Senator Dodd, disregarding Republican objection, also wrote provisions into the first $ trillion bailout bill that allowed the AIG executive bonuses - and he admitted he did it at the request of the "Administration".
Why does the news media allow unchallenged biased reporting as in Speaker Nancy Pelosi and even the President's frequent eloquent public addresses placing blame for this crisis on the Bush administration, which tried on seventeen occasions to initiate reform? The defeat of reform measures in Congress was spearheaded by Representative Barney Frank (D-MA), a self-professed homosexual. Could the glib tongued (no pun intended) Mr. Frank’s illicit sexual ties to a top Fannie Mae executive been the root cause (again no pun intended) of his determined opposition. In addition, Rep. Frank, our Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, states that the private sector caused the problem and now the government must bail them out. I say that lack of Congressional responsibility and quest for power initiated and perpetuated the problem. Those responsible should have to pay the price instead of being lauded and applauded by the liberal press.
Surely, the TV news media knows or has access to the yet unpublicized facts while allowing Democrats to spin their deceptions to the delight of the ignorant masses that follow the yellow brick road to socialism. Americans, please awaken and see what the real price of freedom of speech through a controlled media has cost and will continue to cost for generations. I have little faith that Obama's good intentions and campaign promises will be sustainable with the millstone of his party's projected $10 trillion deficit spending being passed on to future generations. Financing will eventually come by additional mega purchases of US Treasury Notes by China and other emerging nations, and by the proposed sale of carbon credits that will raise the cost of manufacturing, electric power, etc. and will open the door for even more corruption and greed.

What is wrong with these people? Do they think that these condoms would be save to use? An extra 3 cents per condom would at least let people know they are getting quality items, than not knowing what the cheaper Chinese or Korean brands would do or what chemicals they contain.
